]]> Call for Volunteers for Pilot Group – May 2026

FOGSV is seeking interested participants to join a small pilot group to develop a project to test water turbidity (clarity), temperature and salinity in SA waters.  The project hopes to build an ongoing network that monitors our marine waters.

You will need to be a member of FOGSV (currently $10 or $5 conc) to cover your insurance, have a smart phone, regular access to a nearby beach/gulf waters and enthusiasm.

The Friends of Gulf of St Vincent held their Annual General Meeting 2025 on Wednesday, 3 December 2025 at the Port Environment Centre, Port Adelaide.
Adele Mastroyannis, current Chair, welcomed members to a short AGM. This included discussion about the future of the group and it was decided that a committee could be formed and would consider the algal bloom as an opportunity to become involved with citizen science studying this. A committee was duly elected with some positions to be decided later:
Chair – Peter James Moriarty
Treasurer – Kirsty Darlaston
General Members (in no particular order) – Robyn Ravalico, Michael Armour, Geoff Wood, Kylie Ritter, Lynda Yates
After the AGM, Samantha Sea gave a talk on using a microscope to analyse seawater samples and identify phytoplankton including the Karenia bacteria that, with others, have triggered the algal bloom in South Australia. She liaises with other members of the citizen science group, Phytoplankton of South Australia, to build up knowledge about phytoplankton, especially those involved with the 2025 algal bloom.
